We decided to take a day off cycling on day 7 - and do some snowmobiling. We heard the previous day about hiring snow bikes on Myrdalsjokull glacier and decided to go for it. An employee of the snow mobile centre picked us up from Vik hostel at day break and drove us up the long bumpy track to Myrdalsjokull glacier.
We got kitted up and headed out onto the ice cap, led by our guide. Travelling over the snow at over 30mph is fantastic fun and we thoroughly enjoyed the hour we had. I highly recommend snowmobiling to anyone visiting Iceland, though at about £65 per person, it's a little pricey!
In the afternoon we headed into Vik centre and took a tour of the heritage museum. We also took a closer look at Vik's jet black lava beach. From the beach you can see the 3 stone 'trolls' (Reynisdrangar needles) who according to legend, were trying to drag a ship back to land when daylight broke and turned them all to stone |
