Day 10 was our last day in Iceland. Although not a long ride to Keflavik airport, we wanted to visit the Blue Lagoon sulphur pools next to Iceland's largest geothermal power station. The pools are another of Iceland's major tourist attractions and you can come on a day trip from England which takes them in en-route to Reykjavik.
Setting off early, we arrived at the pools by late morning. The pools are a murky cyan colour, due to the high level of natural salts. The water is of course naturally very warm and if you venture too far out becomes exceedingly hot. Swimming around is very soothing and relaxing however, for the masochist, there are freezing plunge pools and ice cold showers to sample.
The sulphur pools were an excellent way to round off 10 days of cycling. We still had the last 15 miles to pedal to Keflavik airport, where we re-packaged our bikes and reflected on one of our most enjoyable cycle tours. |
