After leaving Exeter Hostel, I track the A30 to Honiton and stock up on chocolate milkshake and liquorish allsorts. Then it’s back onto the A30/A303 again. This road is no fun in a car and about 10 times less fun on a bike! Narrow, windy and with fast moving traffic. Still, the cars and lorry’s are polite to me and the recently purchased rear view mirror is worth its weight in gold.

I’m glad to see the back of the A303 at Illminster and get onto the B roads once again. I cycle through some picturesque villages stopping at one of them; South Petherton, for a hot chocolate and obscene slice of Treacle Tart from a café overlooking the village square.

With a couple of hours to kill before Street hostel opens, I’m tempted off-piste to check out the ruins of Muchelney Abbey. King Henry VIII saw to it that my diversion is kept short, by levelling all but one of the Abbey’s buildings. An enjoyable detour though.

On to Street YHA, which is a cracking hostel – superb building, great location and friendly atmosphere.

Rain expected tomorrow - hope the in-laws have got the kettle on!
