Those Romans knew a thing or two about road building, didn’t they? I start off the day following the ‘Fosse way’ out of Stretton all the way to Leicester. This Roman road is straight as an arrow, though nowadays is made up of various A, B and unclassified roads. There’s a mild head wind to contend with, but nothing too serious and yet again it’s gloriously sunny.
I soon find myself in Leicester and locate the Golden Arches for a double bacon & egg McMuffin & Coffee. I then make a major gaffe by heading out of Leicester in a southerly direction! But thank the lord for the gift of GPS (well, thank the US military really). After a quick consultation with the iphone, I wake up to the fact that I’m cycling in the wrong direction!
It’s a bit of a grind cycling into a head wind from Leicester to Nottingham but once I’m through Nottingham, its only a short hop of 20 or so miles to Edwinstowe & Sherwood Youth Hostel.
This hostel’s not about to win any awards for character, but it does serve wine, which is worth at least a few points. While I make my dinner of potatoes, bacon & beans in the members kitchen, I chat with a guy who’s friend is also cycling LE-JoG and is due to finish on the same day as me. Apparently, his mate had a big off descending through Dartmoor though :o/
Tomorrow evening should see me at York if all goes to plan.
