Two weeks ago I left Lands End, Cornwall, not fully believing I’d actually make it to the other end. However, today at 13:58 after 1,016 miles, I roll in to John O Groats.
Today was another cold and at times wet day. Still cycling into a strong head wind and with more hills than yesterday. The first of which came just a few miles north of Helmsdale. Possibly the toughest of the entire trip as it happens, a 2 mile slog up to Berriedale. However, Russian Sniper’s wouldn’t have knocked me off my bike and at a snails pace I struggled to the top.
It was then a slow grind in a bleak but dramatic landscape to Wick. I didn’t stop long in wick, just one final pitstop for lunch at the Sainsbury’s on the North side of town. It’s then only a short ride to John O’Groats. I arrive just as the sun comes out, in time for a photo at the signpost :o)
I ’ V E D O N E I T ! !
I averaged 73 miles a day, spent about 112 hours in the saddle, got at least 10 flies in my eyes, had just 1 puncture and walked up precisely no hills :o)
Shortly after, another LE-JoG group arrive and I get chatting. Would you believe it, it’s the guy who came off his bike over Dartmoor, who’s friend I met in Sherwood hostel on day 7. Unbelievable!
I’ve had a fantastic two weeks cycling Lands End to John O’Groats and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to everyone who supported my and helped me surpass my fundraising target for Multiple Myeloma. I feel like I’m ready to go home now. Tomorrow I fly out of Kirkwall, bouncing off Edinburgh, before arriving into Southampton late afternoon.
